SPELLING AND PRONUNCIATION OF THE PAST REGULAR VERBS


We form the simple past tense and the past participle by adding –ed to the base of the verb:

want    wanted

But verbs ending in:

-e                                                        add –d                        love           loved
cons+y                                               change the y to i         try             tried
single vowel+single consonant        double cons.              prefer        preferred
   
Some exceptions are verbs ending in –y, -x, -w      fix               fixed


 

PRONUNCIATION OF REGULAR PAST VERBS

We have three different WAYS to pronounce these verbs when we add –ed:

1. After    P, K, C, F, TH, Z, SH                     /t/           walk    walked

2. After    B, G, V, S, H, M, N, L, R, Y, W     /d/          play      played

3. After    T or D                                          /id/           decide  decided
