The abbreviation Xmas for Christmas dates from the 16th century. The X represents the Greek letter "chi", which is also the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός (meaning Christ).
The word Xmas was used in religious writing for many years. But it is now offensive to some people because it is considered a commercial strategy to omit Christ from Christmas.
Nowadays, it is used only in informal writing and advertisements.

The word Christmas comes from the Old English words "Cristes maesse", which means "the mass of Christ". That phrase was first used in 1038.
The first festival recorded on December 25th was held by Romans in the fourth century. The celebration was later spread to other societies and cultures, giving origin to modern Christmas.
