After the civil war in Spain in 1939 until 1975, General Franco controlled all the powers of the State in Spain.
He was a dictator, head of the government and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
During his dictatorship:
- Repression and many opponents were imprisoned or executed and many others went to exile.
- 1940 was the year of starvation.
- Political parties and trade unions were illegal.
- Lack of freedom, freedom of expression restricted.
- There were cultural restrictions.
- Many workers migrated to other countries.
- There was economic growth in the sixties with the development of the tourist and automotive industries.
General Franco died in 1975 and the transition to democracy began.
